Looking to learn more about Ma Long equipment?
The Chinese Table Tennis sensation needs no introduction. Long is one of the best players to have played the game.
Not only is he the #1 ranked player in the world, he has retained his spot for years. It’s not uncommon to see his opponents succumb to his dominant play.
If you want to know about Ma Long paddle and blade, you’re at the right place.
Is Ma Long Equipment Any Different?
Chinese National Team uses equipment that’s produced in China. Not surprisingly, Ma uses custom-made Ping Pong equipment as well.
Everything ranging from his paddle/blade to rubber is exclusive to him.
Chinese players (including Long) use STIGA blades that look similar to DHS ones if you scrutinize the handle. That’s because of their sponsor.
They also use DHS produced black rubber that’s bundled with an exclusive sponge. It features a black top sheet and a blue sponge.
Here’s how Ma Long blade looks like:
Ma Long Paddle - History
He is known to switch his paddles from time to time.
From STIGA OC to Nittaku Combi Wood, he has used a lot of blades in the recent times. Back in the day, he wasn’t much of an offensive player as he is now.
It’s slightly hard to generate speed with the all-wood Nittaku blades, but those are built to last, and offer exceptional performance overall.
These still have an edge over the newer Carbon blades. The old school blades offer better control, which can help you play faster strokes with relative ease.
Ma Long experiments often with his blade and rubbers, and is among the rare players who stick rubber to their blades while competing in Int. tournaments.
When he surged in rankings, he used the DHS Hurricane V blade to be #1.
Not many previous champions have used this one except for Wang Liqin and Wang Hao, two fellow Chinese former champions.
It’s safe to say Long is the reason why DHS’ fiber blades rose in popularity.
These feel like pure wood blades even though they are not. The swings are also improved thanks to the longer handle (of the paddle).
For the most part, Ma Long has used custom-made DHS and Nittaku gear.
DHS Hurricane Long 5 is his current blade that’s bundled with custom rubber to help him play at a low angle (his natural angle).
It may not be suitable for all because he’s one of a kind. Not many people are comfortable playing at such a low angle as he does.
The exclusive Ma Long blade is available on Amazon, but it may not be in stock.
This brings us to the conclusion of this article.
As you might have guessed by now, Ma Long equipment is not suited for everyone. That’s simply because your playing style will proably not match his.
That being said, you’re free to experiment with your blade/rubber combination if you’re an advanced player.
If you’re just starting out, you should instead pick a pre-made racket. Once you get better at Table Tennis, look for custom options.
For most players, Ma Long equipment is an overkill.
He plays low, and then again, control isn’t much of an issue for him. However, for most of the players, control can be a concern.
Once you get better at playing Ping Pong and have the basics covered, you can always upgrade your paddles and experiment later.
A Ping Pong table is totally optional because you can always find one at a club or a sports facility. If you do want to own one, find the best options here.
